If you’re a new parent, you’ve got a million things on your to-do list. Diapers. Feedings. Babyproofing. Sleep schedules (or trying to find some yourself). A trip to the dentist probably isn’t at the top of that list, especially when your little one only has a few teeth. But that first dental visit should happen by their first birthday.
We know that sounds early. You might be thinking, “They’ve only got two teeth. What’s there to check?” Fair question. Let’s walk through why it matters and what actually happens so you know exactly what to expect.

Why So Early? It’s About Prevention, Not Just Teeth
Tooth decay doesn’t wait for all the teeth to come in. Early childhood cavities are actually one of the most common chronic conditions in young kids. And once baby teeth get cavities, they can spread fast, because the enamel on baby teeth is thinner than on adult teeth.
But that’s not the only reason we want to see your child early. That first visit is really about you. We want to answer your questions, like:
- Is it okay to put my baby to bed with a bottle?
- When should I stop using a pacifier?
- How do I brush those tiny teeth without a fight?
- Is fluoride safe for my child?
Think of it as a well-baby checkup, but for their mouth. We’re here to help you build good habits before problems ever start.
What Actually Happens at That First Appointment?
We know you might be nervous. Will your child cry? Will it be scary? We promise, we’ve designed this visit to be quick, gentle, and even fun.
Here’s what a typical first visit looks like:
- The lap-to-lap exam: You’ll sit in the dental chair with your child on your lap, facing you. Then you’ll lean back, and your child will lean back onto our dentist’s lap. Everyone stays comfortable, and your little one never leaves your arms.
- The “count and tickle”: We’ll use a soft, clean finger or a small toothbrush to gently count your child’s teeth and tickle their gums. That’s it. No scary tools, no loud noises, no poking.
- A quick chat with you: We’ll talk about how your child’s teeth are coming in, show you the best way to brush them, and answer any questions you’ve got. Then you’re done.
The whole thing usually takes less than 15 minutes.
Why We Make It Fun (Not Scary)
One of the biggest reasons we start early is to build trust. We want your child’s very first memory of the dentist to be a positive one. No tears. No fear. Just a friendly ride in the chair and maybe a new toothbrush to take home.
When kids start young, they grow up thinking the dentist is a normal, safe place. They’re less likely to develop that anxiety that so many adults carry around. And that’s a gift that lasts a lifetime.
You’ve Got This, Parents
Nobody hands you a manual when you leave the hospital. We get that. That’s why we’re here: not just to check teeth, but to be a resource for you.
So if your child is approaching their first birthday, or they’ve already passed it and you haven’t brought them in yet, don’t worry. Just give us a call. We’ll make it easy, gentle, and maybe even a little fun.
Your child’s smile is worth it. And so is your peace of mind.
