So, you’ve done the smart thing. You’ve invested in a custom mouthguard here at our Leland office. Whether it’s to protect your smile during sports or to stop that nighttime teeth grinding (a habit called bruxism), that custom appliance is one of the best investments you can make for your long-term oral health.
Unlike the bulky, “boil-and-bite” guards from the drugstore, your custom-fit guard was designed specifically for your teeth. It fits perfectly, it’s comfortable, and it offers the best protection possible. But just like your natural teeth, it needs a little daily TLC to stay in great shape.
Here is our simple, straightforward guide to making your mouthguard last.

1. Rinse and Brush (Every Single Time)
This is the golden rule. Every time you take your guard out, give it a quick rinse under cool water to wash away saliva and plaque. Then, gently brush it with a soft toothbrush.
Important tip: Use a separate toothbrush, not the one you use for your teeth, and avoid toothpaste. Toothpaste is often too abrasive and can create tiny scratches in the acrylic where bacteria love to hide. A tiny drop of mild, clear dish soap works great. Just make sure to rinse it thoroughly.
2. Keep It Cool and Hydrated
When your guard is not in your mouth, it needs a safe place to live. Always store it in its vented case. This protects it from dust, pets, or getting accidentally crushed.
If your guard is for grinding, make sure it stays in a cool, dry place. Never leave it in a hot car or in direct sunlight. Extreme heat can warp the material, ruining the precise fit we worked so hard to create. If you have a sports guard, you can occasionally soak it in a retainer-cleaning solution (like Efferdent), but check with us first to make sure it’s safe for your specific type of guard.
3. Bring It to Your Checkups
Just like we want to see your teeth every six months, we want to peek at your mouthguard, too! Bring it along in its case to your regular hygiene appointment.
We can check for wear and tear. Over time, a night guard might show signs of wear from grinding, or a sports guard might get thin spots. It’s much better to spot these issues early before the guard fails to protect you. We can also give it a deep, professional cleaning while you’re in the chair.
4. Know When It’s Time for a Replacement
A well-cared-for custom mouthguard can last for several years, but it won’t last forever. Signs it might be time for a new one include:
- Visible cracks or tears.
- It feels loose or doesn’t snap into place like it used to.
- You wake up with a sore jaw (a sign your night guard may be worn through and not absorbing the force of grinding anymore).
Ensure Your Oral Health Today
Think of your mouthguard as a piece of safety gear for your smile. A few seconds of care each day is all it takes to keep it, and your teeth, safe for years to come.
